The "Moments of Change" conference is an important annual event held at The Breakers in South Florida, for substance abuse treatment professionals to meet up and share ideas, experiences, and learn the latest about what is working in addiction and substance abuse treatment. We traveled to share info on intensive outpatient treatment in New Jersey.
Spreading the Word about IOP
Several of us from The Counseling Center in New Jersey recently traveled to the "Moments of Change" conference in Palm Beach, Florida, to help spread the word about Intensive Outpatient Therapy as an important component of substance abuse treatment.
The Moments of Change conference is "Designed to supply professionals with the information, skills, and resources to address the growing needs of an ever diversifying patient base." The meeting is for rehabilitation and treatment professionals, and is said to "Help them stay informed on most recent behavioral health trends, current therapy methods, and best practices".
We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to show counselors and administrators of rehab programs how IOP works at The Counseling Center.
The Importance of Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Treatment in the Home Community
It is essential that professionals working with families and individuals on the difficult battles associated with substance abuse meet and network with each other. In person, they can share insights and ideas, and discuss what works for treatment. In this case, we were very well received by counselors and adminstrators at inpatient rehab programs, because what we do at The Counseling Center is an essential part of the Continuum of Care for recovery and continuing substance abuse treatment.
Sometimes it is necessary to "go away" to an inpatient rehab facility, in order to focus on breaking the cycle of substance abuse and addiction. Inpatient rehab centers provide a complete environment for rehab, free of the stresses and challenges of home, work, school, and drug-using. But then what?
Ira Levy, National Marketing Director for Sunrise Detox, which operates inpatient treatment centers in Fort Lauderdale and the Palm Beaches, noted that many people travel to Florida for the outstanding treatment centers, but still have to one day return to their home communities. At that time, it is essential that they continue their treatment whether it be counseling, regular meetings, or a combination of self-help and professional help in the local community. At Sunrise, Ira says, counselors work to start the process of building up a support community even during the intial detox stage. The support network is that important!
